Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The King of Staten Island isn’t the funnest film of 2020 (that said this year is far from a good year for comedies). It’s not the best Judd Apatow movie. But what The King of Staten Island does do is bring a bucket load of charm and honestly that has been absent from a lot of 2020’s movie releases so far. It’s 2020’s most charming film. A whole heap of that credit comes down to the cast – from Pete Davidson’s broken tattooist to Bill Burr’s intense fireman and Marisa Tomei’s caring mum… you actually care for the characters and the choices they make. It’s films like this that make you wish the Acadamy Awards looked at ensemble casts. It may be a long watch but The King of Staten Island is worth it.
