Les Misérables (2020) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Ladj Ly’s French language crime film is a bit of an enigma.  For the first two acts it delivered a competent if slightly underwhelming look into the relationship between police and mostly petty criminals in a crime ridden French district.  It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, and whilst its well done you get the feeling you are treading water a bit.   But then during act 2 something happens that spins the film off into a different, but I guess expected, direction and the film picks up quickly taking the narrative through to a simply stunning last act as consequences quickly arrive.  And what a last act – tense, brutal and shocking it lifts the film to something worthwhile to invest in.

Best Bit: The last act.
