Mulan (2020) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Confession time – i’ve not seen the original animated version of Disney’s Mulan.  So I can only view the 2020 remake as a film in its own right, without any previous baggage.  So how WAS Mulan circa 2020? Well actually I really enjoyed it. It’s not perfect for sure but you don’t always need perfect – sometimes enjoyable is good enough.  Make no mistake about it Mulan was created for the cinema and will reward those with good set ups that can make the most of it’s gorgeous visuals, sunning production design and sweeping camerawork.  Beyond those visuals there’s a lot to take in here – from smart gender politics to loyalty and family, just like most good Disney films it works on a variety of levels.  But ultimately this is an adventure film and with some clever PG-13 action scenes and smart editing the film pulls it off.  Just don’t expect Game Of Thrones limbs to be flying. So worth £19.99 to watch at home? Yup I’d day so.

Best Bit: Chi.

Buy, Stream, Avoid: Buy (Disney Plus)

If You Liked this Try: Mulan (1998), The Lion King (2019), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
