Phil's Quick Capsule Review

This Is England (2006) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Set against the backdrop of Thatchers 80’s and the rise of skin head culture, This Is England is Shane Meadows doing what he did best – social drama but not in a Ken Loach way.  That’s not to diss Loach (I’m a big fan of his recent work) but Meadows brings a lived experience to his films and for me has always been at his best when revisiting those on screen. What I loved about This Is England is that whilst it’s a familiar story, Meadows fins a fresh spin on it that makes it seen even more relevant today as the rise of extreme politics continues to gather pace.  A great cast (Thomas Turgoose shines as does the always excellent Stephen Graham) & some gritty direction make this a real stand out.

Best Bit: Turgoose is phenomenal.
