Phil's Quick Capsule Review
Indiana-Jones-films

Rated: The Indiana Jones Movies

RATED looks at EVERY Indiana Jones film and gives a QuickReview as well as putting them in order of BEST to, well, Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull!

(Note scores reflect my updated IMDB ratings)

Best: Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)

Raiders of the Lost Ark is probably the best Indiana Jones film from a critical point of view, a collection of iconic moments, visuals and music that still holds up better than the majority of modern action movies.  Harrison Ford delivers one of THE best performances in history and Spielberg puts together action films better than almost anyone in film.  Well worth a rewatch.

2. Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom (1984)

Temple Of Doom has always been much maligned as one of Spielberg’s weakest films.  Don’t listen to them! Whilst Temple Of Doom maybe be the weakest of the original trilogy it’s far from being a bad film.  In fact rewatching it after all these years it’s surprising just hope much fun it is (even with its considerable darkness).  Yup it’s violent, yup it’s dark and yup its probably not for kids BUT Temple Of Doom is the perfect prequel sequel.

3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Oddly I always remembered last Crusade as my favourite Indiana Jones film.  Not the best but the one i enjoyed the most. Rewatching it, it turns out that whilst it’s still a great film I’m probably a bigger fan of Temple Of Doom.  But ranking aside there’s so much fun here. From the tank sequence to boat escape, it’s a thrill ride that doesn’t let up.  Add in Connery and you have one of Spielberg’s most fun films.

Worst: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

For about half the film I was wondering ” Why DID I dislike this so much first time around” and then the monkeys/ants/aliens bits arrived and I went”Ah THAT’S why”.  Look it’s not terrible it’s just a very below par Spielberg with some of his flattest direction ever.  And if Spielberg doesn’t care why should we?
