Blog: Grosse Point Geek – The Divergent Series: Allegiant
After the cliffhanger ending of Insurgent, Tris, Four, Peter et al escape from the walled confines of the future Chicago and make their way across the scorched ruins of the Earth to find what remains of the government and by doing so bring an end to the violence that has erupted in their home city.
Im struggling to muster the strength to write this review so please bear with me. As you may be aware i am not the biggest fan of the YA genre and even less so of the Divergent franchise. Its not that they are by any means bad films – no indeed -in fact on a technical level they are very good and Allegiant (third in the series) is no exception. On the whole Its well directed by Robert Schwentke and the set designs and SFX are quite inventive in places. My problem with this film and others like it is that its so damned average in its story telling and characters.
To begin with the plot simply meanders along never once becoming engaging or interesting, all the characters are ether complete drips (Woddley and James being the worst offenders) totally bland (Kravitz and Watts) or simply dislikable. Which means that you dont really care who lives or dies and consequently are never invested in the story as a whole. Only the great Jeff Daniels makes any impact as the chief baddie – but sadly he isnt on screen enough for one to really sit up and take notice.
Perhaps im being too harsh as these types of films are not aimed at my age group – they are for teenage girls and pre pubescent boys who can alternately moon over Woodley or James all the while never giving a damn about anything else going on. So if you are one of those people then i guess you will like Allegiant and good luck if you do – the rest of us can happily avoid it and confine ourselves to proper movie going experiences .
To be honest that really is all i have to say about this one – i wish i could go into more depth but when one has watched something as average as this it really isnt worth it.
